Calling All Naturals w/ Curls, Coils & Kinks

You know how it is when you go to the store for ONE thing and return with MORE natural hair products – yes guilty! I knew that Shea Moisture had dropped a few new products but my goodness there are more than just a few. (lol) I saw these two products and was intrigued to try them as the hair masque from this line is one of my favorites. Also I just have NEVER had great success with gel stylers and I have been curious how a gel-cream formula would compare against my fickle tight curls. I thought adding a leave-in detangler would create a powerful duo! It’s summer time and time to experiment with my wash and go’s and try some new products. Shea Moisture is one of my favorite natural hair companies… will I be able to add these products to my staple list?

First of all, even those these are SM products I must admit I am still unsure about any gel formula. My hair always ends up dry and just blah. However, you don’t know until you try. What would be the point in always wondering, lol?! So, I took a leap of faith and now here we are. If you are familiar with SM Superfruit Complex line these two products are a part of that line as well. I love SM products as they are almost sold everywhere beauty products are sold… easily accessible. This SM Superfruit Multi-Vitamin Gel-Cream Styler retails for $10.99 for 8 fl. oz. and the SM Superfruit Multi-Vitamin Leave-In Detangler retails for $11.99 for 8 fl. oz. These products are designed for curly and wavy hair infused with Biotin and Marula Oil and are sulfate free & color safe. Here is the breakdown on the Leave-In Detangler: If you are looking for a product to separate and unravel tangled strands and knots with multi-vitamin benefits then this treatment they say is made for you. Say bye to dull, lackluster curls and waves! As for the Gel-Cream: This product will define your waves and curls while providing soft hold and fight frizz using a multi-benefit styling aid. Both products claim to: hydrate, nourish, detangle, define, revive body, smooth, tame frizz, seal, hold, protect and add shine! I am expecting these products to do every bit of that and more… but did they? Follow me to my wash day!

So, I am going to use both of these products together today. The leave-in will serve as my leave-in and the gel-cream will be my styler of choice. I will still add my oil in between those two products as I follow the LOC Method. I used the Superfruit Complex Masque today and just finished rinsing it out. I LOVE that stuff! I then proceeded to add my DIY refresher and began to spray that all over after I was done as I proceeded to grab my leave-in detangler. The leave-in detangler is housed in a bottle and this product was super easy to get out as some SM products aren’t. The texture of this product is creamy yet contains a very loose watery feel. Does not feel anything like the SM detangler from the Raw Shea Butter line. As I began to spread the product all over my hair I had to keep using more and more as this product once it melts into your hair almost feels non-existent as if I added nothing. For a detangler I would have expected a lot more slip. I was able to effectively distribute product but if I hadn’t detangled prior not too sure this would have parted my red sea, lol! The smell is exactly the same as all the other products in this line, which is that perfume floral smell which I love. My hair was completely covered and ready for the Gel-Cream… or was it?! (lol)

After I sealed my hair with my oil of choice I was super excited to finish off styling my hair with the Gel-Cream. I worked in sections as I usually do and the instructions stated to. They also mentioned to use this product on wet or damp hair. My wash and go’s are most successful when it’s really wet. This product is housed in a tube like bottle which I love. The texture of this product was exactly like it’s marketed – GEL CREAM. The texture wasn’t sticky or hard to remove from the tube just glided right out. As I rubbed the product between my fingers it felt very moisturized and was super easy to apply. I did notice that towards the end of my styling phase my hair seemed drier than normal vs when I am using a cream based styler. I didn’t panic just let the product do its thing. This product also had a decent amount of slip for a gel although I don’t have a ton of experience with gels. In some sections I used more product and some I used less- let’s just say I can be heavy handed. I am so used to using creams where the more the better, lol! I quickly started to use less and just played around with the product some in different spots. As the product dried what were my thoughts and did this combo make me ready to jump on the gel train?

FINAL THOUGHTS: As my hair dried it was a tad bit crunchy is some areas. If you like a decent amount of hold you probably would like this product. I am sure being heavy handed contributed to that outcome. I mean my hair wasn’t going anywhere, lol! My hair after it started drying felt very sponge like, do you guys know what I mean? I don’t know how to best describe it but I didn’t like it. I didn’t mind the hold it was the frizz sponge aftermath that I was not a big fan of. Another thing that was kind of a huge indicator that this probably wasn’t going to have the results I was looking for was the fact this combo didn’t leave a white residue on my hair. I know you are thinking what? You like the white residue? Yes – white residue that dries clear has always been successful for me. I am not too sure on the science and why but just my observation. My hair was just kind of one big curly frizz ball… now that’s nothing new except these products claimed they would take care of all of those issues for me, lol! Now, it could be several factors. My hair thrives on moisture in the form of butters and creams and traditional leave ins… so maybe that was part of the problem? Or perhaps a traditional leave-in was my missing link? Or could it be my hair has rejected yet another gel? I couldn’t figure out if it was the leave-in detangler my hair wasn’t feeling or the gel-cream or the combination of both.

Solution: Play around with these products more. This definitely was not a successful wash n go for my thirsty tresses but I did learn a few things nevertheless. I wasn’t a hug fan of the leave in detangler as it hardly did anything for my hair that the product claim it would do. I saw absolutely no benefits from this product for my texture of hair. My hair loves thick, rich creamy products vs. lightweight products. As far as the gel-cream, I think what I will do is not use the SM Superfruit Leave-In but use my SM staple Leave in Conditioner that has NOT failed me yet. Maybe my hair needed a little bit more conditioning and less help in the detangling department. The Gel -Cream wasn’t a horrible product but I think my hair needs more of a moisturizing gel or this product needs to be paired with a better leave- in. Product combination can make a big difference. All in all, this process was very insightful and has given me hope that maybe if I change a few things I can get back on the gel train again, lol! Also if you have fine or more of a wavy texture your hair may benefit even more from either of these products. I sure was hoping for a 10 while using a gel but just because I didn’t get it today doesn’t mean I will never achieve it. I hope this was a insightful product review and encourage you to try these products out as you may have better success than I did. Also – if I find a winning combination while using either one of these products I will be back to share don’t worry! Thank you for flipping through the pages of my journey… until the next page… Chow! ♥
