The Mane Choice Biotin Infused Styling Gel & 3-in-1 Revitalize & Refresh Conditioner ~ FIRST IMPRESSION ~ Product Review!

Calling All Naturals w/ Curls, Coils & Kinks

I can’t believe I finally got my hands on these two products above; as there are a lot of chatter and buzz going on about them. Good chatter? Well…let’s just say it’s good and bad and a little of something in between. I have been highly curious about this line and in particular these two products right here. Now you all know I experienced sweet victory with my Camille Rose Curl Maker Gel and thought why stop there, lol! Now my hair and gels don’t have a great history but doesn’t stop my journalistic fingers from hitting that “Purchase” button and that’s exactly what I did. There was a BOGO sale on this product line at Sally Beauty Supply stores but a lot of people beat me to the punch as most of the inventory was sold out. Also, I noticed that they didn’t carry the gel at all yet there. A few days later I purchased the conditioner from SBS online and the gel from Target online. A few days later I was greeted with two packages in my hands and tons of questions, lol! I will say due to the many questionable reviews I have watched and read I was very leery on these products giving my hair exactly what it needs: LIFE! Follow me to the next phase and see if it’s worth all the hype or did it leave me confused like others.

INTRO: Here is the rundown on these two products and this science-based product line where their motto is: BEAUTY• HEALTH • SCIENCE. The 3-in 1 Conditioner retails for $13.99 for an 8 fl. oz. bottle and the Biotin Infused Styling Gel retails for $11.99 for a 16 fl. oz. jar. You can purchase these products at the Mane Choice website, Target, SBS, and Rite Aid although it varies per store. The gel is labeled a “healthier way to gel”. The gel claims it will define your curls, smooth edges, mends detectable damage, stimulates growth, and provides maximum hold. Not only is this gel infused with Biotin, Avocado Oil & Vitamin E but it’s gentle enough for everyday use, moisturizes the hair and tames frizz, and helps to minimize damage breakage. My main takeaway is that this is a strengthening gel. The 3-in-1 conditioner is super unique as it can serve as a co-wash, leave-in and detangler. A naturals dream team right there, lol! This conditioner claims it will gently rinse away impurities and product buildup, instantly hydrates and moisturizes, and removes knots and tangles. This conditioner was designed gentle enough for everyday use, leaves hair feeling revitalized and refreshed, and minimizes damage and breakage. There are a ton of ingredients that make up this product however Biotin and Tea Tree are a few that were highlighted. Sounds like this product could be too good to be true. Both products are natural growth and retention solution branded and contains no Mineral Oil, No Petroleum, No Parabens, No Sulfates, No Formaldehydes. Follow me to see if all the claims worked for my hair!

WASH DAY: I was pretty excited about this product haul I purchased although I had a feeling about the outcome. Despite my personal feelings and thoughts, I wanted to try them for myself. I plan to use the conditioner as a co-wash and leave-in and my gel as my styler. As I grabbed the conditioner to start my co-wash process I thought to myself well this will be different, lol! As I squeezed out some and began applying it to my scalp the smell was very different; very hard to describe however the best word that comes to mind is masculine. I rather enjoyed it. The texture was thick and gooey yet creamy at the same time. I was able to easily apply the product to my scalp and it was super easy to lightly finger detangle although the co-wash had a light sudsy feel. The product felt very moisturizing on the hair and the slip factor was maybe about an 8 not too bad at all but not the best I have ever felt. I was able to rinse out the co-wash with no problem and my hair/scalp felt clean afterwards and moisturized at the same time while my strands felt strengthened. I didn’t notice any tangles or major issues at this stage. Fast forward after detangling and DC: It was time to use the same co-wash now as my leave-in. Still baffled by the 3-in-1 idea I proceeded to squeeze some product out and add a little on to my hand and work it through on wet hair. I was able to easily once again detangle and evenly distribute the product with no problems.

THE GEL: Now, I just finished adding my leave-in and now I will be adding my moisturizing cream before adding the gel. When I had initially conducted my research I noticed a lot of people state this product severely dried out their hair. Me trying to be all proactive decided I was going to show the gel who was boss. LOL! So I was going to add the KING of all moisturizers prior to adding this gel. Once I did that it’s now time for the gel application phase. It says to apply gel to clean damp hair and that’s what I am working with. So this should be golden, right? First of all, this gel is light baby blue and smells I guess quite masculine again yet very clean and crisp. I enjoyed this smell as well. The consistency is what I would classify as a traditional gel; thick yet very gooey and quite slimy. This gel despite it’s awesome chemical make-up didn’t glide easily through my hair. This gel also didn’t have enough slip for my tight curls. I did apply it all over my hair despite being disappointed already from the jump. So, did the hype show through on my hair?

FINAL THOUGHTS: NOPE! Where do I start, lol! The 3-in-1 conditioner was very impressive on pen and paper. Actually results weren’t that bad at first. My hair seemed to like this product as a co-wash. The claims did show through on my hair as it did remove product buildup, it did instantly hydrate and moisturize my hair, it did detangle my hair as well so in that aspect it did its job. As a leave-in this is where it got foggy for me. My leave-ins tend to help define my curls and leave them soft and supple ready for styling. This leave-in was so-so as it did add moisture… just not enough hence why I decided to add more moisture before adding the gel. This leave-in also did absolutely nothing for enhancing my curls. One interesting factor I would like to highlight is although I don’t lose a lot of hair when I do detangle with my DC after co-washing with this I noticed hardly any shed hair. It did do a decent job at detangling however not better than my staple detangler.

NOW…the gel! Lord, have mercy. You guys know I pride myself on telling the truth in love but that stuff right there was absolutely unnecessary and was very disrespectful to her (my hair), lol! I mean I bought it, spoke highly of it and it left me looking and feeling like a chia pet…no ma’am! This product didn’t apply easily, didn’t define my curls, moisture…what moisture? and my hair was a big frizz ball. I will admit it seemed alright at first when it was wet and I was all done. I wasn’t ready to throw in the towel despite it being challenging to apply and just the overall lack of benefits it gave my hair. However, when it dried it was a wrap, lol! My hair became one big frizz ball and was super dry although I didn’t experience any flaking. My hair moisturizer is a king champ of all the moisturizers and when a product sucks the life out of it’s not a product I want in my stash. Guess all of that chatter was true well at least for my texture. I did notice a lot of naturals who do have success with this gel had a fine texture and hair more of a loose curl pattern or wavy hair. So if that’s you; you may have better success. For me this gel and I must part and I will find it another home. This gel really did show its true colors and left my hair feeling blue, lol!

TAKE-A- WAY: Overall I was very happy to try these two products although due to its reaction with my hair will not be repurchasing either one. You don’t know until you try and honestly although some products it takes several tries to truly tell if it works well for you or not other times it tells you immediately. The 3-in-1 conditioner was a nice try but honestly I prefer a cleansing conditioner designed to only cleanse my hair with other added benefits than a conditioner that can contains some cleansing ingredients. As a leave-in and detangler I just can do better it’s that simple. The gel was a no. I have nothing else to say just NO. The next day was even worse as my scalp began to itch really bad which never happens to me and further more magnified my initial NO. I hope this review was helpful to you and inspired you to get out there and try something new even if it’s different. Have you tried these products from MC or any other products with success? What products are you crushing on lately? As always thank you for flipping through the pages of my natural hair journey… until the next page chow! ♥

I’m a new natural, and still trying products to see which one would work well on my hair. I appreciated your review. My hair texture is 4b, and I too don’t think this product will do well on my hair. If you have any advice for my hair texture please share. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for reading! Congrats on being newly natural as well. My best advice is to try various products from different companies until you find what works best for you. You can always start with the basics:spray bottle with water, conditioner, coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera liquid, etc. Everyone is so uniquely different so it’s hard to recommend products. I love products from: Shea Moisture, Hydratherma Naturals, and NaturelleGrow on Etsy. Have fun and explore! 😉
